Testing on animals for medical purpose should be banned
Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in American laboratories every year. Laboratories very often use rats, rabbits and mice. They use them to test new drugs or cosmetics for people.
On the one hand, the world needs new drugs against illnesses such as cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, or schizophrenia. The scientists first test new drugs on animals, it is better than testing new drugs on people because tests often fail and the test object dies. Furthermore, the testing on animals is cheaper than testing on people.
On the other hand, testing on animals is not only cruel but also often ineffective. Animals do not get many of the human diseases that people do, for example cancer or heart diseases. Moreover, 92% of drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical tests because they are too dangerous or don’t work. This means that millions of animals die unnecessarily. When scientists test potential carcinogens, animals are given a substance every day for 2 years. Sometimes scientists must kill pregnant animals to use their babies for testing.
To sum up, testing on animals is inhuman and ineffective but a lot of drugs have been invented and a lot of lives have been saved. Europe have already banned animal testing for cosmetics and in the future the scientists might find the way how to produce new drugs without testing them on animals.
